KIND OF WORK: This is an part-time entry level position in researching, planning, designing, and managing the Geographic Information System (GIS) for Cullman County 911.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK: An employee in this class is responsible for updates and edits to the GIS system as well as basic hardware/software issues associated with it. The employee will assist in development of software applications and databases and assist in coordinating requirements between departments and other agencies for Cullman County 911. Work is performed using ESRI based GIS software and a relational database system under the supervision of the 911 Director and may be needed to provide support to users who staff location 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. This position is considered non-exempt under FLSA guidelines.
EXAMPLES OF WORK: (Any one position may not include all the duties listed nor do the listed examples include all tasks which may be found in positions of this class.) Assists in the planning and organization of system operations and development to insure efficient GIS services; consults with user organizations, management and GIS technical personnel to determine user needs; creates and/or assists in designing and enforcing GIS standards and operating procedures; plans, allocates and monitors time, personnel, equipment and other resources as needed; assists in developing project schedules and work programs; assists in monitoring the status of scheduled projects; helps organize application and database development activities; recommends hardware and software acquisition; maintains frequent contact with users to improve system quality and provide timely assistance; promotes and markets GIS project applications; performs related work as required. The employee will assist with other duties as assigned.
ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS OF THE WORK: Knowledge of GIS concepts, principles and procedures; knowledge of geoprocessing and mapping principles and techniques; knowledge of data processing principles and database management theory and application; ability to effectively use and operate computer programs of the employing jurisdiction; ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; ability to effectively establish schedules, priorities and assist with project implementation plans; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with public officials, department heads, consultants, and other employees. The employee will be responsible for ensuring the Cullman County 911 mapping system is regularly updated and functioning as designed. The employee will work closely with management, other staff, IT personnel, vendors, and consultants as needed to troubleshoot and correct any issues that may arise with the GIS system.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor’s degree or knowledge and work experience equivalent in Geography, GIS, IT, Engineering, CIS, 911, Emergency Management, or a closely related field, including course work in GIS or IT. Employee must possess a valid Alabama driver’s license and pass a background check.
